Driver in critical condition after vehicle strikes pole, bursts into flames

One person is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after a vehicle slammed into a pole and burst into flames at King and Parliament Sts. early Sunday morning, prompting a dramatic rescue attempt by police.

Shortly after 6:30 a.m. a vehicle went off the road and collided with a pole at the intersection outside 51 Division headquarters, said Const. David Hopkinson. Officers heard the crash and ran to assist.

“(It) struck a pole so hard that (it) dislodged the pole,” said Hopkinson.

The driver, who escaped the flaming wreck before police arrived was clearly suffering from critical injuries, Hopkinson said.

Witnesses told police that there were more people inside the burning car, which was fully engulfed in flames. However, when officers smashed the windows to extract them, they found the car empty.

Police believe more than one occupant fled, but do not have a definitive number at this time.

The cause of the crash is under investigation by Traffic Services.
